Mrs. Peterson, Librarian

Hicksville Public Schools has demonstrated its commitment to literacy by maintaining libraries in each building that are staffed by certified librarians who are available full-time to guide children in their knowledge and understanding of how a library functions, to help them develop skills for using the Internet safely and efficiently, and how to conduct research on topics of interest.

Each year, librarians in all buildings play a critical role in the revision and updating of summer reading lists and the promotion of summer reading programs. The librarians have incorporated Lexile ratings (measures of a book's readability) into the summer reading lists for each book for which a Lexile rating was available. These ratings allow librarians, teachers, parents and students to pair students with a book of appropriate difficulty by matching the Lexile measure with a similar measure generated from students performance on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests from the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA).
