Hicksville Public Schools has demonstrated its commitment to literacy by maintaining libraries in each school. Each library is staffed by a certified librarian who is available full-time to guide children in their knowledge and understanding of how a library functions, to help them develop skills for using the Internet safely and efficiently, and how to conduct research on topics of interest.

Each library contains a diverse collection of books and print materials for all levels and interests of readers. In addition, computers with internet access are available for student use in each school library.

Each year, librarians in all schools play a critical role in the revision and updating of summer reading lists and the promotion of summer reading programs. Each of our summer reading lists on all grade levels incorporates Lexile ratings (measures of a book's readability) for each book for which a Lexile rating is available. These ratings allow librarians, teachers, parents and students to pair students with a book of appropriate difficulty by matching the Lexile measure with a similar measure generated from students performance on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests from the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). Summer reading incentive programs are offered to students in the elementary and Middle Schools to encourage summer reading. Throughout the school year librarians offer book clubs and other special programs for students.
